SIMATAI WONDERS

Standing on the Great Wall, one can appreciate the magnificence of the mountains. The Wall is like an old man from the past that tells historical stories. The ancient wall, peeled bricks with inscriptions and delicate cameo are thought-provoking. The varied breadths of the architecture remind its viewers of the ups and downs in people's lives.

BEAUTIFUL SCENERY ON STEEP CLIFFS APPEAL TO VISITORS

The Simatai Great Wall is built along the mountain ridge. Along the Wall, there are cliffs, streams, hills and towers. With parts suspended in the mid-air, the Geat Wall is delicatedly located and the river resembles a dragon running between mountains. In particular, the "Heavenly Ladder" and "Heavenly Bridge" are the two most dangerous sections. The "Heavenly Ladder" has only one wall and is characterized with steep track and narrow wall, with the narrowest part less than half one meter. The awing ladder ascends so astonishingly vertically over the cliff that one does not dare to look aside when climbing it. The ladder is the most dangerous section of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall. In Beijing Strategic Plan for Tourism released in 1985, the ladder was named "the most dangerous yet amazing spot of the Great Wall", which totally lives up to its feature.

THE STRUCTURE OF THE WALL IS LIKE THAT OF A SAW WITH EACH SECTION DENSELY ARRANGED TOGETHER

Some sections of the Wall have ordinary structure while some are half wall built ingeniously along with the shape of the steep cliff of the mountain. There are paths, quite mild, for horse rides and "Heavenly Ladder" which is nearly vertical with steep stairs. A series of blocking crossing barriers on the Heavenly Ladders make it hard to be conquered. One can look through the arrow hole from the top straightly to the the bottom. The design is delicate and admirable.

THE LAKE AND THE MOUNTAIN FORM A MAGNIFICENT PICTURE

The Simatai Great Wall and the Yuanyang Lake echo each other. When you are on the Great Wall, you can have a broad horizon. Unique scenery of northern China with mountains, forests and lakes are all in your view. The Wall looks like a giant dragon hovering in the rocky mountains.

DIVERSE AND WELL-DESIGNED STRUCTURE

Some sections of the Wall have ordinary structure while some are half wall built ingeniously along with the shape of the steep cliff of the mountain. There are paths, quite mild, for horse rides and "Heavenly Ladder" which is nearly vertical with steep stairs. A series of blocking crossing barriers on the Heavenly Ladders make it hard to be conquered. The design is ingeniously combined with the landscape of Yanshan Mountain ridge.

DIVERSE AND SMART DESIGNS

The signal towers and walls have different shapes. An example is the roof. There are six kinds of roofs including flat roof, dome roof and octagonal roof. For walls, there are seven types including single-side and double side "obstacle wall". Some of the walls are single-layered while some are double layered. Some are in the shape of echelon. Signal towers take even more forms such as two-layered, three-layered, square, round, ruler-shaped and those with two, three, four, six and twenty-four windows. The diversity and variety is very rare along the Great Wall.
